A pterygium is a common growth on the surface of the eye. It looks like a fleshy, pink or white tissue that forms on the white part of the eye and can slowly grow onto the brown part of the eye.
The exact cause is not known, but it is linked to long-term or excessive exposure to UV light (too much sunlight), dry windy environments and exposure to plenty of dust. As it develops, besides the visible growth, it can lead to a foreign body sensation in the eye, which can be irritating, as well as redness and dryness. Treatment depends on how much the growth bothers you.
However, an optometrist may advise you to use artificial tears, which help lubricate the eye, thus reducing discomfort. In extreme cases, you may be advised to visit an Ophthalmologist to discuss surgery to remove the growth. The best way to protect your eyes is by wearing eyewear with UV protection and wearing a wide brimmed hat that provides a shady covering from the sun.
